FRA Roundtable 2017: Children behind bars? A children rights perspective on justice and imprisonment.

Welcome address and introductory words: Federal Minister Thomas Drozda (Federal Minister for Arts and Culture, Constitution and Media)

The roundtable will focus on child-friendly justice and will tackle the question of how to protect the rights of children deprived of liberty, in connection with the recently published FRA report “Child-friendly justice – perspectives and experiences of children and professionals”. Gudrun Berger (UNICEF Austria, invited), Monika Pinterits (Vienna Ombudsoffice for Children and Young People), Astrid Podsiadlowski (EU Agency for Fundamental Rights), Helmut Sax (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights, member of the Council of Europe’s Group of Experts on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings) will discuss with Manfred Nowak  (Former Member of the Management Board of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights, Founder and former Scientific Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights) the necessary steps to ensure that the operation of justice and the imprisonment of children are in compliance with children’s rights.This topic is currently also being addressed by the UN Global Study on Children Deprived of Liberty, which Manfred Nowak was appointed to lead as Independent Expert in 2016.
