Changing communities, Changing policing - CITYCoP Final Conference

CITYCop Logo

The theories underlying community policing received new impetus with the recent advent of smartphones and social media and especially the notion of user-generated content where the users are citizens engaged in closer interaction with their local community and law enforcement agency. The five years 2010-2014 have seen a rapid upsurge of smartphone apps aimed at improving crime reporting and other forms of UGC and interaction associated with community policing.

The research project CITYCoP analysed the common features and the best practices embraced by apps which have been successful worldwide and determined why apparently promising ones have failed. It then produced a uniquely European solution including a smartphone app and an on-line portal, which are capable of being deployed in every European city while still retaining the “local flavour” and diversity.

This April, the CITYCoP project organizes its Final Event to present the unique technological solution for improving citizen engagement and efficiency of law enforcement operations developed by the project, the SecureU mobile application and back-end, as well as the academic research that the project has carried out. SecureU is piloted in five cities: Florence, Lisbon, Bucharest, Dublin and Kildare. The BIM is part of the consortium of this research project that is funded by the European Union under the Horizon 2020 programme.

The event’s first day will give an in-depth view of the CITYCoP system. Practical demonstrations of the SecureU mobile application and the back-end will be given along the day as well as an insight in the training modules that have been applied in the pilot cities to implement the system. The second day will focus on the academic research on different aspects of community policing and participants will be able to dive into the different aspects of community policing with a number of field experts. Register here to join the event.
