STEM 3.1, University of Essex, Colchester Campus
Focus on digital exposure, human dignity and armed conflict.
On Wednesday, October 21, 2026, our colleague Konstantina Stavrou from the research group “General Human Rights Issues” will participate in the launch of the report Dignity in Conflict: Investigating the Role of Open-Source Content in Exposing Vulnerable Persons to Public Curiosity during Armed Conflict by the University of Essex Digital Verification Unit, at the University of Essex.
How does the online circulation of conflict-related content affect the dignity of vulnerable individuals, and how does international law respond when their exposure is reproduced or amplified through digital platforms?
Konstantina Stavrou will discuss the circumstances under which uploading or further dissemination of content depicting humiliating treatment could be relevant to the war crime of outrages upon personal dignity. Her contribution will consider how the nature and scale of online dissemination, including the content’s reach and the reactions it generates, may inform the assessment of the seriousness of the humiliation suffered by the person depicted.
The panel discussion will also feature Laetitia Maurat from the Centre for Information Resilience and Tatiana Grote from the University of Essex, and will be moderated by Dr. Matthew Gillett.
