22 Jan 2026, 18:00 – 22 Jan 2026, 20:00
Top floor of Juridicum, Faculty of Law, University of Vienna, Schottenbastei 10-16, 1010 Vienna
The event organised by the Bar Association will focus on current material and institutional challenges to the protection of human rights in Europe.
It will among other things cover issues of migration in the context of the ECHR, freedom of expression and religion (e.g. in connection with headscarf bans), recent criticism of the ECtHR, and the role of the United Nations Human Rights Committee and the United Nations Human Rights Council. In particular, the panel discussion will also highlight the interconnection between human rights and democracies, which are coming under increasing pressure worldwide. In doing so, special attention is paid to the importance of open and objective social discourse.
A high-profile panel will address current developments in European human rights protection, issues of the rule of law, and perspectives regarding democracy and fundamental rights:
- Prof. Dr. Michael Lysander Fremuth;
- Prof. Dr. Sylvia Kritzinger;
- Mag.a Sabine Matejka, President of the European Association of Judges.
