As part of the EU project “Strengthening the Procedural Rights of Suspected and Accused Persons in Criminal Proceedings – the Role of National Human Rights Institutions”, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) will host the conference “Developing Guidelines for National Human Rights Institutions on Strengthening Procedural Rights”  cin Vienna on Thu, 24 October 2019.

The event, funded by the European Commission, will gather National Human Rights Institutions from the EU area as well as national and international experts to discuss how National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) can promote and protect the rights of suspected and accused persons in criminal proceedings. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences. The results of the conference will be used as concrete guidelines for National Human Rights Institutions to strengthen procedural rights and will be incorporated into a handbook.

During the course of the project, the LBI-GMR , the Hungarian Helsinki Committee (Hungary), the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (Poland), and the Peace Institute (Slovenia) conducted extensive research on the issue of the current and potential role of NHRIs in promoting and protecting procedural rights in criminal proceedings. In addition, a consultation workshop was held in February 2019 and national workshops were held in Austria, Hungary, Poland, and Slovenia.

Participation by invitation only.
