This Symposium, organized by the LBI-GMR, will examine the nexus between technology and crime in relation to trafficking of human beings.

Digital content and technologies have transformed not only our private life or the conduct of business, but also hugely impacted crime and human rights. The symposium “User-Generated Content and Trafficking in Human Beings” on Tuesday, 31 October 2023 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. will have a close look on the connection between technology and crime in the context of trafficking of human beings.

Organised by Konstantina Stavrou and Helmut Sax from the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR), the event gathers renowned experts from academia, international organisations and practitioners in the field in order to advance research and concrete responses in this highly topical field.

Human trafficking constitutes one of the crime areas in which the multiple effects of digital technologies and instruments, and in particular social media and networking platforms can be identified. Technologies have changed the modus operandi of criminal networks and their way of recruitment and control of victims. At the same time, user-generated digital content can be used for law enforcement and investigative purposes, but also to enhance victim protection.
