The workshop highlights the challenges in the identification of trafficking cases and the role of open source and user-generated information in this context.

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) is organising, in cooperation with the University of Vienna, a workshop titled ‘Open Source and User-Generated Content and Trafficking in Human Beings’ on Tuesday, 19 November 2024, 1:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the University of Vienna. The LBI-GMR will be represented by its Scientific Director and Professor of Fundamental and Human Rights at the University of Vienna, Michael Lysander Fremuth, as well as by Senior Researcher Helmut Sax, Researcher and University Assistant Konstantina Stavrou and Researcher Edith Riegler.

The aim of the workshop is to reflect on the challenges in the identification of trafficking cases and the role that open source and user-generated information as well as digital platforms might play in this regard. The contributions will address the topic from different angles, such as the investigation strategies used in different countries and the role of digital forensics and digital platforms in the identification of trafficking cases. In addition, their cooperation with domestic authorities as well as the various existing guidelines for the use and evaluation of this type of information will be discussed.

Following up to last year’s symposium on the topic, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the benefits and challenges of the reliance on open source and user-generated information in the identification and investigation of human trafficking cases and debate on existing problems and the way forward.

The workshop is relevant for academics, representatives of international organisations engaged in this topic, representatives of prosecution agencies, as well as inquiry and fact-finding missions, who are already using novel forms of technologies to identify and collect evidence.

Registration for the workshop is mandatory but free of charge. You can access the registration form at https://forms.gle/xs7YAMitnJsh77aj8
