President Alexander Van der Bellen

All human beings have the right to live in peace and dignity – this is something I am deeply convinced of and I am committed to it with all my strength. I would like to thank the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights for its excellent and valuable scientific contribution to the protection of these rights. I would like to wish you, dear readers, interesting and informative insights into the world of human rights research!”

From the Editorial

Dear Reader,

Even in times of supposedly unlimited access to knowledge in the virtual world, we as researchers continue to believe in the printed word – not least as a medium that is uniquely suited to and appropriate for science. Print products offer special access to
information thanks to their feel, their design and their unique reception possibilities.

That is why, in addition to the wide range of material we provide online, we have published this information brochure on the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBIGMR) in print. It is intended to introduce our institute
to readers and spark interest in our work. It provides numerous facts and key data about our scientific work. At the same time, it aims to show how exciting human rights research can be, and to whet your appetite for more through a variety of journalistic portraits of projects, publications, and people.

Introducing…

Konstantina Stavrou, what has been on your mind lately?

I have been thinking a lot lately about the fragility of the human rights architecture. Although significant progress
has been made over the past few decades in establishing international norms and frameworks, recent developments
have highlighted how easily these structures can be undermined. The erosion of human rights protections is evident
in various parts of the world that face political repression, authoritarianism, and conflict, which raises questions about the future of human rights institutions.

“A stronger protection of children’s rights requires a change of perspective!”

Our children’s rights expert Helmut Sax is convinced of that. Due to be published in mid 2026, the ‘Practical Handbook on Children’s Rights’, co-authored by Helmut, will outline the legal consequences of such a change in Austria.
