EU Support for Rule of Law in North Macedonia: Publication of the eighth Quarterly Report
The quarterly report provides insights into the project’s achievements, particularly in combating discrimination and corruption as well as enhancing capacities of judiciary.
Between March and June 2025, within the framework of the “EU Support for Rule of Law” in North Macedonia project, supported and funded by the Directorate-General for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR), significant results have been recorded.
Focusing on promotion of equality and prevention of discrimination, the second annual Equality Talk series focused on the right to housing for Roma communities. The panel, including the president of the Republic of North Macedonia, the EU Ambassador to North Macedonia and other key figures from relevant equality institutions, demonstrated both the readiness and commitment to address the structural challenges related to equality and non-discrimination. In addition, representatives of municipalities with Roma population and Civil Society Organisations joining the event allowed exchange of views that enriched the discussion on finding solutions to this issue.
In another effort to promote non-discrimination and inclusiveness of children with disabilities, a training for 26 educators was conducted at a primary school in Skopje. The training focused on addressing the importance of recognising biases and taking inclusive measures in the classroom. This marked the beginning of cascade training by alumni of the training of trainers programs on “The Art of Training and Participatory Facilitation for the prevention of discrimination and Promotion of Equality,” which aims to ensure the non-discrimination and inclusiveness of children with disabilities.
Furthermore, a workshop was held to foster fair, unbiased and non-discriminatory policing. It provided training for 12 professionals coming from various related policing departments. The workshop aimed at enhancing participants’ awareness, legal knowledge, and practical skills related to anti-discrimination in policing.
This quarter’s other highlight was a workshop on enhancing the judiciary capacities. 30 participants from different judiciary institutions together with international and national experts worked to identify both the challenges in the organizational capacity of the judiciary and possible reforms to them. The creation of a strategic roadmap through collaborative effort in the second half of the year marks a milestone in the fight against persistent barriers to the independence and effectiveness of the judiciary.
