‘The Oxford Handbook of LGBTI Law’ – Book Launch and Symposium

From 10 to 11 October 2024, the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights invited to the presentation of ‘The Oxford Handbook of LGBTI Law’ followed by a full-day symposium in Geneva.

Michael Lysander Fremuth, Scientific Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) and Professor of Fundamental and Human Rights at the University of Vienna, is, together with Andreas Ziegler from the University of Lausanne and Berta Esperanza Hernández-Truyol from the University of Florida, co-editor of the comprehensive and unique ‘Oxford Handbook of LGBTI Law’. It brings together leading international academics to address a wide range of issues concerning LGBTI people from an academic perspective.

Numerous experts from academia and practice accepted the invitation to the book presentation at Villa Moyrier on 10 October 2024. The book was presented in the context of a discussion between the two editors, Michael Lysander Fremuth and Andreas Ziegler, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk. It was particularly important to the latter to participate in the discussion in person and to provide insights into the relevant activities of his office. The discussion was rounded off by the descriptions of the UN Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, Graeme Reid, who was appointed in 2023.

Both UN High Commissioner Türk and UN Independent Expert Reid emphasised the relevance and practical support that the handbook will provide in the future. They thanked the authors and especially the editors for their work on the publication.

On the day after the book presentation, selected authors presented their respective chapters to an interested specialist audience at a symposium. The topics ranged from intersectional approaches in the jurisprudence of human rights panels to the recognition of same-sex marriages and queer perspectives in international humanitarian law. During the symposium, Michael Lysander Fremuth also presented his chapter on ‘Migration and Asylum’. Andreas Sauermoser, head of the LBI-GMR’s ‘International Criminal Law and Human Rights’ programme, was also present and presented the findings of his contribution ‘Queering International Criminal Law’.

‘The Oxford Handbook of LGBTI Law’ is published by Oxford University Press. The handbook is available online at https://academic.oup.com/edited-volume/55361. The print version will be published in spring 2025.
