Our Scientific Director’s International Research Stays in the Summer Semester of 2026

In the summer semester of 2026, Michael Lysander Fremuth, Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Fundamental and Human Rights, is taking a research semester, which he is also using to undertake stays abroad.

His research focuses primarily on the regulation of artificial intelligence and the question of the right to a human decision in AI, as well as on the relationship between the right of peoples to self-determination and migration. On an institutional level, Fremuth is working to promote the new research network “Democracy and Human Rights” abroad and explore opportunities for collaboration, as well as to recruit students for the university’s postgraduate Human Rights Master’s programme, which has been running very successfully for many years.

During his first stops, Michael Lysander Fremuth discussed the regulation of artificial intelligence with colleagues at the National University of Singapore and current human rights issues at the University of Hong Kong before spending an extended period at the University of Macau. There, he gave a lecture on AI regulation and the right to human decision-making as opposed to automated decision-making by AI, and engaged in discussions with colleagues and students. He also conducted interviews and background discussions with journalists. Various aspects of human rights protection as well as the state of democracy were addressed in bilateral discussions. Furthermore, he discussed opportunities for institutional cooperation with Dean Tong of the Faculty of Law at the University of Macau. Special thanks go to Professor Rostam Neuwirth for the warm welcome, hospitality, and many interesting conversations.
