Conference on the interplay between AI and human rights

Academics and experts discussed the latest developments, legal frameworks and challenges in relation to AI and human rights.

The “Global Conference on AI and Human Rights” took place on 13 and 14 June 2024 at the Law Faculty of the University of Ljubljana. The conference focused on the topic of artificial intelligence and its interaction with various issues of international human rights protection. The various panels dealt with aspects of AI and privacy, AI and discrimination and AI and law enforcement, among others.

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) was represented by the Scientific Director of the Institute and Professor of Fundamental and Human Rights at the University of Vienna, Michael Lysander Fremuth, as well as our colleagues Konstantina Stavrou, researcher and university assistant, and Keketso Kgomosotho, university assistant.

Michael Lysander Fremuth moderated a panel on the topic of “AI, Fair Trial, Right to Effective Remedy and Access to Justice” and gave a keynote speech on a possible right to a human decision in the context of AI. He argued that such a right is already recognized by and enshrined in some legal documents, stating: “AI systems pose peculiar and often not directly recognizable threats to human rights. This, as well as the knowledge and perception of what it means to be human, shared only by humans, can justify a human right to a human decision.

Stavrou gave a presentation on user-generated content and deepfakes in international criminal proceedings, while Kgomosotho shed light on the discrimination potential of AI and spoke about new approaches to the legal governance of algorithmic AI discrimination.
