The fourth volume of the Menschen.Rechte! book series, published by the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights, is now available from MANZ Publishing. Edited by Michael Lysander Fremuth, the volume reflects on the significance and future of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action (VDPA), 30 years after the UN World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna.

Adopted in 1993, the Vienna Declaration reaffirmed the universality, indivisibility and inalienability of human rights. Three decades later, these principles are increasingly challenged by authoritarianism, armed conflicts, democratic backsliding and growing social inequalities.

Following the international conference “Major international human rights conference in Vienna – LBI für Grund- und Menschenrechte – Strengthening Imperatives 30 Years After”, held in Vienna in late 2023 and featuring more than 90 speakers, 19 distinguished contributors from academia and practice developed their conference contributions into chapters for this volume. They examine current challenges to the international human rights system and explore perspectives for its future. The chapters address, among other topics, the protection of minorities, women, children, refugees and LGBTQI+ persons, the role of international and regional human rights mechanisms, and the importance of independent institutions and a strong civil society.

Combining academic analysis with practical perspectives, the volume demonstrates why the future of human rights depends on resilient democratic institutions and a vibrant human rights culture.
