Our Scientific Director’s Research Stay at the Munk School in Toronto

In 2026, Michael Lysander Fremuth combines his research semester with international academic stays.

The current research of the Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) focuses primarily on the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) and the question of the right to a human decision in AI, as well as on the relationship between the right of peoples to self-determination and migration. On an institutional level, Fremuth is working to promote the new research network “Democracy and Human Rights” abroad and explore opportunities for collaboration, as well as to recruit students for the university’s postgraduate Human Rights Master’s programme

In April and May, Fremuth had the pleasure of being a visiting professor at the Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy at the University of Toronto. On his very first day, he participated in the 2026 European Affairs Capstone Seminar Conference, “Old Continent, New Conflicts: A New Europe for Illiberal Times”, where he engaged with students and commented on their impressive presentations. He also attended inspiring lectures, including one on Václav Havel and his legacy, and another on rethinking war and transformation in Ukraine. At the workshop “Building Bridges: Research and Activism Along the Canada–U.S. Border”, he discussed his early findings on migration and self-determination with colleagues.

During his stay, Fremuth also focused on Canada’s approaches to AI regulation, discussing this and other topics with his colleagues, including the rule of law and democracy, as well as strategic litigation in environmental protection. He furthermore visited experts on AI regulation at the Université de Montréal.

Fremuth extends his heartfelt thanks to Robert Austin and Randall Hansen for their hospitality, the stimulating discussions, and a very pleasant stay. He also thanks Catherine Lukits and Olga Kesarchuk for their administrative support.

The LBI-GMR looks forward to strengthening this academic exchange, to welcoming students from the Munk school as interns, and to involving them in our projects.
