Strengthening Our Asylum and Migration Team
Since mid‑February, Sebastian Sperner has joined our institute as a Prae‑Doc in the Asylum and Migration programme line, where he supports our research activities.
He works on the project “Externalisation and Rightlessness”, which examines how international refugee law can enable situations of rightlessness.
Sebastian brings extensive hands‑on experience in legal representation of refugees—both from his work with NGOs and from legal practice. He has also worked in a law firm specialising in media law and is currently active in an association engaged in legal‑policy work on asylum and migration law.
He studied Law at the University of Vienna and International Legal Studies at New York University.
Reflecting on his new role, Sebastian notes: “In the field of asylum and migration, externalisation measures are currently gaining significant momentum. This makes it all the more important to take a close look and carefully assess the developments associated with them.”
We are delighted to welcome Sebastian to the team and look forward to the insights he will bring to both research and practice.
