What does Freedom of Assembly mean?

The scientific director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights, Michael Lysander Fremuth, explains the importance of freedom of assembly in the Demokratikum, the new visitor centre of the Austrian Parliament.

What does freedom of assembly mean? Answers to this question are provided in an interview in the Demokratikum, the new, interactive and multimedia visitor centre of the Parliament, by Michael Lysander Fremuth, scientific director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR). Fremuth spoke on the topic of freedom of assembly alongside Sahar Mehrabani Fard (architect from Iran) and Gerhard Pürstl (Vienna State Police Chief).

Freedom of association and assembly is a constitutionally protected fundamental right in Austria. In the interview, Fremuth discusses when the right to freedom of assembly can be restricted. Additionally, he talks about changes in protest culture through the use of social and digital media.

The Demokratikum is part of the new website of the Parliament. It aims to give people an insight into the functioning of parliamentary democracy, the development of democracy and behind the scenes of parliamentary operations.
