Nora studied law and Middle Eastern studies at the University of Bonn and completed her PhD at Friedrich Schiller University in Jena with the support of a scholarship from the Friedrich Ebert Foundation. Before coming to Vienna, she spent two years as a visiting scholar at Fordham Law School and worked as an associate professor and head of the Department of International Law at the German University in Cairo, as well as teaching at the American University in Cairo. She also served as international relations advisor to the Egyptian Minister of Tourism as well as human rights and gender consultant for UNOCT and OHCHR, amongst others in Iraq.

Her main areas of research include the international protection of human rights, international human rights law, inter-State litigation, international dispute settlement, UN human rights mechanisms, gender equality, and the relationship between human rights, democracy, and the rule of law, particularly in the MENA region.

What Nora says about her arrival at the LBI-GMR: “What has struck me most since joining the institute is the range of expertise that comes together here. I am genuinely fascinated by how broad the institute’s portfolio is and by the impact its different research groups have in their respective fields. I am looking forward to learning from colleagues working on such a wide variety of issues while contributing my own experience in international law and human rights.”
