About the project
The project examines the measures and support services currently available at higher education and research institutions within the remit of the Federal Ministry for Women, Science, and Research (BMFWF) to combat gender-based violence and develops recommendations for the individual sectors as well as the federal ministry.
Research Topic and Roadmap
International studies show that gender-based violence is a serious issue in academic settings. The status quo assessment aims to identify the institutional framework, measures, and support services for combating and dealing with gender-based violence in higher education and research settings.
The aim of the project is to gain a comprehensive picture of the existing structures in order to derive practical, sector-specific recommendations.
The project is being carried out on behalf of the BMFWF and makes a targeted contribution to the further development of gender equality and anti-discrimination in Austrian higher education and research.

Research Method
A multi-stage, integrative approach combining quantitative and qualitative methods will be used to implement the project.
The first step will be an Austria-wide online survey using a questionnaire that records existing measures, structures, and support services. This will be complemented by qualitative interviews with representatives of selected institutions as well as focus groups to gain deeper insights into specific challenges and examples of good practice.
At the same time, the legal framework will be analyzed, examining both the legal basis and its practical implementation in the institutions.
The results will be incorporated into the development of concrete, sector-specific recommendations and compiled in an accessible final report. This will be published by the BMFWF.
