Michael Lysander Fremuth
Michael Lysander Fremuth has been Scientific Director of the LBI-GMR since 2019 and Professor of Fundamental and Human Rights at the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law at the University of Vienna since the same year. In addition, he serves as Academic Director of the postgraduate University Programme “Human Rights” and as Scientific Co-Director of the Research Network “Democracy and Human Rights”.
Michael Lysander Fremuth studied law at the University of Cologne, specialising in international and European law, human rights, legal philosophy, and general state theory. During his education, he gained practical experience at the German Bundestag in Berlin, the European Commission (DG Competition) in Brussels, and the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in New York. In 2010, he completed his doctoral degree with a thesis on the supranational nature of the European Union and received the University of Cologne Award for outstanding academic achievements. He completed his Habilitation in 2017 with a study on the impact of globalisation on statehood and sovereignty. Since then, he has held the venia docendi (postdoctoral teaching qualification) in public law, including general state theory, as well as international and European law. Fremuth has worked as a visiting scholar in the United States, Canada, Japan, Singapore, Russia, South Africa, and Türkiye. He has also taught as a lecturer, interim chair holder, and visiting professor at the Universities of Bayreuth, Freiburg, and Trier, as well as at Freie Universität Berlin.
Alongside his academic work, Fremuth is actively involved in various international and human rights organisations. He was co-founder and long-standing chair of the German United Nations Association (DGVN) in North Rhine-Westphalia, served as a member of the DGVN Federal Board, and contributed to the International Affairs Committee of the German section of Amnesty International. He is also a member of the Committee on Migration of the International Law Association and a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Human Rights Institutes. Due to his expertise, Fremuth is a sought-after commentator for the media as well as for national and international governmental institutions.
