HUMAN RIGHTS TALK: Human rights under pressure – Exceptional circumstances as the new normal in Europe?

Datum

Dienstag, 18. Oktober 2016 – 19:00 bis 21:30

Ort

Dachgeschoss Juridicum, Schottenbastei 10-16, 1010 Wien

The event is organized by the Research Centre Human Rights of the University of Vienna in cooperation with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights.
Thanks to progress made in past decades, Europe boasts one of the most sophisticated systems of rights protection. Protection which, in the current political climate, is at stake. Basic human rights are seriously under threat in Hungary, Poland and Russia, to name a few; whilst Turkey, in the wake of the failed coup of July 2016, has declared a state of emergency that was swiftly followed by the arrest and detention of judges, journalists and political opponents.
Rubina Möhring (Reporters without Borders), Manfred Nowak (Research Centre Human Rights), Lukas Oberndorfer (AK Wien), Hannes  Tretter (Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights) and Şerife Ceren Uysal (Turkish lawyer), will discuss. Moderation: Eva Zelechowski (Wiener Zeitung).
