Legal Traineeship

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights is a non-university, interdisciplinary research institute of the Ludwig Boltzmann Gesellschaft in Vienna that operates at the intersection of academia and practice. It is affiliated with the Faculty of Law at the University of Vienna (Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law) and is dedicated to practice-oriented research in the areas of fundamental and human rights as well as the rule of law at the national, European, and international level and to the application and implementation of the resulting scientific findings in legal practice. To this end, the Institute collaborates with intergovernmental, supranational, and national governmental and non-governmental institutions and organizations, including the United Nations, the OSCE, the Council of Europe, the EU, as well as Austrian federal ministries and private companies.

Legal Trainees can expect to work on a wide variety of topics at the Institute. In addition to the general protection of fundamental and human rights, our Institute addresses topics such as human dignity and public security, equality and non-discrimination, people in vulnerable situations, asylum and migration, EU neighbourhood and integration policy, development cooperation and the economy, the environment and the SDGs, women’s rights, children’s rights, combating human trafficking, as well as digitalization and international criminal law.

Prof. Michael Lysander Fremuth, Ph.D., the Institute’s director and a German lawyer qualified to serve as a judge under German law, is responsible for the training programme. He also holds the university chair in Fundamental and Human Rights at the Department of Constitutional and Administrative Law at the University of Vienna.
