Lecture on ethics and human rights in medicine

Michael Lysander Fremuth shed light on the ethical and human rights dimensions of medicine and nursing as part of the PH Nurse Forum 2024.

On 20 September 2024, Michael Lysander Fremuth, Scientific Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) and Professor of Fundamental and Human Rights at the University of Vienna, spoke at the 7th PH Nurse Forum at Schlosshotel Mondsee on the topic of ‘Ethics and human rights in medicine’. He shed light on the various ethical and human rights dimensions in medicine as a service to people and identified human dignity, autonomy and non-discrimination as fundamental principles in both disciplines. ‘A large part of the actions you take every day and the decisions you make are connoted and influenced by human rights – not least because the legislator is obliged to regulate the medical field due to its duty to protect,’ said Fremuth to the attending experts from the fields of medicine and nursing. Numerous examples were used to illustrate and substantiate this statement.
