The handout “Europa in der Volksschule. Unterrichtsbeispiele und Projektideen” for elementary schools contains exercises and lesson plans that are suitable for an introduction to the topics of Europe and the European Union. In the first exercise, the children use a map to learn about the countries of Europe, their borders and their geographical location. Lesson pictures on Austria’s neighboring countries take up this idea again and let the students take a closer look at those countries they may know from vacations or stories. Exercises on European identity, on the common European currency, on the diversity of languages in Europe offer further possibilities to deal with European topics. A concluding exercise on the Council of Europe and human rights focuses on the fact that Europe is more than just the European Union.
