What role do human rights and the fundamental values of the European Union play? How formative is the integration of the ECHR and the European fundamental values, including the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, for the Austrian Federal Constitution?

What is the significance of the ECHR, the 13 fundamental values listed in Art 2 of the EU Constitution and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU, which was proclaimed 20 years ago and has been legally binding for 10 years, as well as the decisions of the ECJ in Luxembourg and the ECtHR in Strasbourg for constitutional law in Austria?

Political education is an essential basis for the acceptance of the values of the democratic constitutional states of Europe. What is wrong with the way it is taught?

The discussion about this is held by:

  • Maria Berger, judge at the European Court of Justice from 2009 to 2019
  • Hannes Tretter, scientific director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Fundamental and Human Rights from 1992 to 2019
  • Wolfgang Bogensberger, head of political reporting and deputy head of the European Commission Representation in Austria

The discussion will be moderated by Friedrich Forsthuber, chairman of the Association for the History of Justice and the Rule of Law.

Die Veranstaltung wird live im Internet gestreamt.
