HUMAN RIGHTS TALK: Cyber-Violence – Same story, new guise?

Datum

Donnerstag, 14. September 2017 – 19:00

Ort

Dachgeschoß des Juridicums (Schottenbastei 10-16, 1010 Wien)

A journalist logs onto twitter after publishing an article and is met with threats and abuse; a young girl’s schoolmates leave cruel comments under her new profile picture; a woman nervously logs onto her computer, scared that she might have received another email from her stalker. All of the above are examples of the cyber-violence with which women and girls are increasingly confronted.

Often perceived as less serious because of its online nature, the consequences of cyber-violence can be as severe as their offline counterparts, also driving women away from public online spaces. Psychological trauma, real world violence following online stalking or mobbing and the silencing of women and girls in the public sphere. Despite the internet having revolutionised the way we share information and interact with one another, it also acts as a space where violent acts occur under a veil of perceived anonymity and impunity.

Sandra Breiteneder (Bundeskanzleramt), Jelena Gučanin (Journalist), Dina Nachbaur (Weisser Ring), Melanie Halbig (Johannes Kepler Universität Linz), Barbara Unterlerchner (ZARA), und Maria Windhager (Lawyer), will discuss what the term cyber-violence encompasses, who it affects and how, and ways in which governments, schools, workplaces and individuals can deal with this phenomenon and ensure that women and girls can express themselves and their views in a safe, online environment. Moderation: Katharina Mittelstaedt (Der Standard). Welcome address: Anna Müller-Funk (Research Centre Human Rights, University of Vienna).

Kindly observe that this event is held in German. Following the discussion, the Research Centre Human Rights and the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights would like to invite you to join the subsequent reception.
