The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR), the Global Campus of Human Rights (Venice) and the Right Livelihood Foundation invite you to the final conference of the project “Personal Freedom as a Child’s Right – Alternatives to Deprivation of Liberty and Restrictions of Liberty in Austria?” on Fri, 17 December  2021 at 10:00 am (Livestream/Zoom).

Every child has the right to personal freedom, and any kind of restriction is only permissible under very special circumstances. However, the UN International Study on Deprivation of Liberty of Children, led by Prof. Manfred Nowak, presented a startling report in 2019 – according to which more than seven million children worldwide are deprived of their personal liberty in various institutional settings.

Since autumn 2020, a project team of the LBI-GMR in Vienna, commissioned by the Global Campus of Human Rights (Venice) and supported by the Right Livelihood Foundation, has been working on a project to examine the situation in Austria, with regard to deprivation of liberty and restrictions or their alternatives in the context of institutional placement of children (justice, migration, psychiatry, etc). More informations about the project.

Results of the project will be presented at the conference on Friday, December 17 and discussed in working groups. The subsequent panel discussion with representatives of monitoring institutions in Austria will be followed by an outlook on further implementation steps. You can also expect contributions from young people involved in the project.

The program is available in the download area below.

The event can be watched live on our YouTube channel on Fri, 17 December 2021 starting at 10am.
