‘Eyes on the War’ shows the terrible reality in Ukraine

The photo exhibition ‘Eyes on the War’ at the University of Vienna opened on 19 June with a high-profile panel discussion.

The photo exhibition ‘Eyes on the War’ by Ukrainian photographer duo Konstantin and Vlada Liberov was on display at the University of Vienna from 19 to 28 June 2024. Inaugural speeches were held by Sebastian Schütze, Rector of the University of Vienna, and Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Khymynets, among others. A panel discussion on the humanitarian, legal and political aspects of the war also took place as part of the opening ceremony. Michael Lysander Fremuth, Scientific Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) and Professor of Fundamental and Human Rights at the University of Vienna, contributed his expertise in international and human rights law.

‘We see blatant violations of international humanitarian law and human rights in this war of aggression. The international community must do everything in its power to put an end to this and hold those responsible to account,’ Fremuth explained. He also noted: ‘The bad news is that Ukraine will probably have to win the war in order to secure peace in Europe.’

The aim of the exhibition was to display the cruel reality in which Ukrainians are living today and thus to create a deeper understanding of the situation in Ukraine. It combined photographs with individual stories.
