Statement of the BIM on the draft amendment of the Austrian asylum and migration law 2018

The 2018 draft proposed to amend the Austrian asylum and migration law aims to “prevent asylum abuse” and to “increase the efficiency of asylum and immigration law procedures”. The proposal seems to assume that asylum-seekers are generally badly intentioned. These generalizations are used to legitimize measures that intervene in human rights of individuals and that reinforce the already existing special status of asylum law. The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Human Rights therefore addresses critical aspects of the proposal.
