Talk-Review: The Committee on Social Rights under the European Social Charter

Franz Marhold provided fascinating insights into the work of the European Committee of Social Rights.

Franz Marhold, member of the European Committee on Social Rights (ECSR), shared insights into the committee’s work on Wednesday, 24 April 2024, at the Juridicum. The event was hosted by the Institute for Labor and Social Law of the University of Vienna (Elisabeth Brameshuber and Martin Gruber-Risak) in cooperation with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR).

After a historical overview of the committee’s development and its original tasks, Marhold talked about its current activities. Particularly interesting for the audience were questions at the intersection of international law, labor law, social law, and national (civil) procedural law. The interplay between the European Social Charter (ESC) and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) was also addressed. It was vividly demonstrated to the participating students that the ESC, as the “little sister” of the ECHR, also raises quite interesting questions.

As the subsequent discussion showed, Franz Marhold succeeded in sparking interest in the ESC and the committee’s work through his engaging presentation. Those who wish to delve deeper into the subject might find opportunities through traineeships offered by the Council of Europe.
