Monday, 5 June 2023, 4:30 pm

Where:

Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, Favoritenstraße 15a, 1040 Vienna

The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR), the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna and the Federal Ministry of Justice invite to the event series “Justice Speaks” of the Federal Ministry of Justice, on Monday, 5 June 2023, at 4:30 p.m. in the ballroom of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna on the topic “Climate Protection as a Human Right”.

The climate crisis threatens our environment, our existence and our livelihoods. It reinforces existing inequalities and threatens basic human rights such as the right to life, the right to food, the right to clean water and the right to health. Additionally, it forces people to leave their homes. In short, the climate crisis is also a crisis of human rights.

The focus of “Justice Speaks” on 5 June is therefore the interplay between the environment and human rights. Discussions will include the significance of the newly created human right to a clean environment for the further development of climate and environmental legislation or how climate protection, human rights and sustainable development can be thought together even more strongly.

The event will be opened by Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler and the Director of the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, Emil Brix. The keynote address will be given by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk.

This will be followed by a discussion from the Federal Minister of Justice, Alma Zadić, the lawyer Michaela Krömer and the Director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights and Professor of Fundamental and Human Rights at the University of Vienna, Michael Lysander Fremuth. Markus Kornprobst, Professor of International Relations at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, will moderate.
