From Mon, 12 October 2020 – Tue, 13 October 2020, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) will participate in an online workshop led by the Croatian National Preventive Mechanism (NPM). The topic of the workshop is “Strengthening the prevention of torture in South-East Europe: monitoring safeguards in the first hours of police custody”.

During the workshop, NPMs from South Eastern Europe as well as international experts will discuss how to effectively ensure the monitoring of the implementation of procedural standards for the prevention of torture and other forms of ill-treatment in the first hours of police custody. Furthermore, the workshop will provide an opportunity for mutual exchange on promising practices and methodologies.

Giuliana Monina, expert on torture and ill-treatment and Head of the Department of Human Dignity and Public Security at LBI-GMR, will give a presentation on challenges and promising practices from the Southeast European region based on a survey of the Southeast European NPMs and current research findings.

The workshop is organized in cooperation between the Croatian NPM, the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Fundamental and Human Rights, the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) and the NPM Forum of the Council of Europe.
