New project “RIGHTSCITIES” launched
The aim is to effectively implement the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights at city level and to raise awareness in this area.
The implementation of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights can still be expanded at local level. This fact serves as the starting point for the project “RIGHTSCITIES: Localising the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU by operationalising the FRA Framework for Human Rights Cities“, which was launched in June 2024. The Framework for Human Rights Cities in the EU defined by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) serves as a methodological framework.
The work of the project focuses on:
- Raising awareness and understanding of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and its impact at local level
- City administrations and civil society actors in selected European cities are supported in assessing compliance with the Charter
- the Human Rights Cities approach is institutionalized as a strategy for the local implementation of the Charter
The project, funded by the European Commission – DG JUST, is based at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute of Fundamental and Human Rights (LBI-GMR) in the programme line (In-)Equalities and Non-Discrimination and is carried out under the lead of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (Sweden), together with partners from Sweden, the Netherlands, Poland and Austria.
