Study on „Trafficking in organs, tissues and cells and trafficking in human beings for the purpose of the removal of organs”

The UN and the Council of Europe jointly released a study about “Trafficking in organs, tissues and cells and trafficking in human beings for the purpose of the removal of organs” on 13 October 2009 in New York. Carmen Prior, Austrian public prosecutor and former Resident Twinning Advisor (RTA) of a BIM-led Twinning-project on Trafficking in Croatia, is co-author of this study.

The study shows that trafficking in human beings for the purpose of the removal of organs and trafficking in organs, tissues and cells need to be clearly distinguished. Whereas there are legal instruments on trafficking in human beings and an internationally agreed definition, a single definition on trafficking in organs, tissues and cells does not exist. But for both areas the improved collection of reliable data is recommended.
